2013-12-03 17.49.18On Tuesday night we found ourselves immersed in a evening of German creativeness. Cult glasses brand ic! berlin invited us to celebrate the launch of their collaboration with Transitions lenses. When we first walked into the room we were greeted with the sight of man sitting on mattress in front of a 10 foot poster of himself wearing a feather headset. Needless to say, it was as indication of what was to be a night of surreal German inventiveness which saw us enjoying an exclusive show from a renowned performance artist and making our own pair of glasses.

ic! berlin are one of those brands that you’ve probably seen before but just never realised, their glasses and sunglasses have been seen on the faces of a-list celebs everywhere. The company itself was founded by Ralph Anderl who took a unique approach to eyewear with their patented screwless frames which are all made by hand out of  sheet metal or acetate in the heart of Berlin.

As well as housing their factory and offices, their Berlin base is also literally the home of artist and performer, Friedrich Liechtenstein who was the afore mentioned man on the mattress and whom in exchange for free rent is ic’s artist in residence. Yet another reminder of the unique way  founder Ralph runs ic! berlin, all of the company’s frames come embossed with his mobile number where customers can text or call any queries, comments or questions.

So while we were enjoying the smooth voice of Freidrich we sat down to a take part in a tutorial in how to make our very own pair of ic! frames just like they do in their factories, sort of. I started off with a metal cut out of a glasses frame and some sand paper, a few minutes later and a couple more pieces of metal later and we had our very own pair of ic! berlin frames fitted with Transitions lenses.

After all that hard work we had a chance to take a look at ic’s huge range of glasses which ranged from classic rectangle frames, chic cat eyes to an eye-catching paint splattered pair, in an amazing spectrum of colours and finishes. Check out some of favourites as featured on our instagram
